Who is eligible for student health insurance?

All full-time matriculated students and certification students enrolled in twelve (12) or more credits for undergraduate or nine (9) or more credits for graduate students are automatically charged for Rowan University insurance coverage for the entire academic year.


How can a student waive the health insurance?

Undergraduate, Graduate and GSBS Students:

To waive the Rowan University insurance coverage, follow the steps provided below:

  • Go to Banner Student Self-Service.
  • Click "Access Banner Services."
  • Log in using Rowan ID number and PIN.
  • At the main menu, click "Student Health Insurance Waiver."
  • Enter insurance company name and policy or group number and submit.

Rowan SOM and CMSRU Students:

To waive Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (Rowan SOM) and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) insurance coverage, go to firststudent.com and click on "Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine" or "Rowan University - Cooper Medical School," as appropriate. You will find the link for the waiver form on the left.


Can I enroll in the insurance after the waiver deadline?

If you are a student and eligible to purchase coverage, and you choose not to enroll for coverage before the Annual Enrollment Deadline, you will not be eligible to enroll again until the start of the next fall semester, unless you experience a “Qualifying Life Event” during the year.

How do I know if I am eligible for insurance due to a “Qualifying Life Event?”

Students who did not enroll themselves during the open enrollment period may be able to enroll in the policy if they experience a Qualifying Life Event. Qualifying Life Events may include the following:

  • Acquiring a new family member
  • Marriage/Civil Union
  • Divorce
  • Loss or change of Job
  • Expiration of Benefits

Rowan University does not determine if the student is eligible. In order for the student to determine if they are eligible, they must contact First Student Insurance at 1-800-505-4160. Please note the student must contact the insurance company within thirty (30) days of the Qualifying Life Event to be eligible.

How does a student request an insurance card?

If a student wishes to request an insurance card, they must do so by visiting the First Student website (firststudent.com). The student may access their ID card by visiting their My Account. From their My Account, the student can print and download their ID card.

How does a student create a My Account?

A student will be able to create their My Account 24 to 48 hours after the insurance company has been notified. Please follow the instructions below to create your account.

  • Go to firststudent.com.
  • At the site, select “Rowan University” as the school.
  • Select “My Account” from the left border.
  • Select “Create your My Account” from the “My Account” section.
  • You will be directed to the United Healthcare site. You must provide your name, date of birth and Rowan email address.
