SANDA ILIESCU: Collages and Drawings

Opening Reception: November 13, 2008 @ 4:30 - 6:30 pm

Sanda Iliescu is an Associate Professor of Art and Architecture at the University of Virginia. Born in Romania, she came to the United States at age 15 with her mother who was a political refugee. She turned to painting, collage and drawing after earning an undergraduate degree in civil engineering and a masters in architecture at Princeton University. Widely exhibited, her work is currently represented by Vagabond Gallery in New York City. Among her professional awards are The Rome Prize and The Distinguished Artist Award of the New Jersey State Council of the Arts.

Sanda will also be giving a special gallery lecture titled: The Street and the Studio: Should contemporary artists make both public art and studio-based work?
This lecture examines the contemporary practice of "public" art – art that is conceived, executed, and displayed outside traditional artistic venues.   In particular, it seeks to understand what this art form, known for its often rather overt political and social messages, may offer the realm of aesthetics. The lecture is scheduled for 4:30 PM and is free to the Rowan University community and to the general public.  Please join us!
