English language instruction at Rowan University in Camden has a long tradition. The Camden Center opened in 1969 as an urban center. For the first eleven years the ESL progam was a night program designed to help working students learn English as they earned a Bachelor's degree. In 1980 the intensive daytime program began, and with it the English Language Institute Program. This program allows international students on student visas who have not been admitted to the college to study in the same intensive English classes as regular matriculated students.
