In Search of the Higgs Boson" on 4/19
03:30 PM - 05:00 PM
Location: Rowan Hall Auditorium

The CSM Dean's Distinguished Speaker Series welcomes Dr. Sarah Eno as she presets, "In Search of the Higgs Boson: The LHC and results from the energy frontier." The University of Maryland professor will lecture on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a proton-proton collider located in Geneva, Switzerland, which began operation in 2008 and currently provides the highest center-of-mass energy in the world. During the summer of 2012, two of the experiments located at the LHC reported evidence for the production of a new particle whose properties seemed consistent with those predicted by the Standard Model for the Higgs Boson. In this talk, Eno will discuss these results, what more can be learned about this particle in the future, and the remaining mysteries of particle physics.

Biography:

Sarah Eno received her B.A. from Gettysburg College, her Ph.D. from the University of Rochester and did post-doctorial work at the University of Chicago, before taking a faculty position at the University of Maryland. She is interested in searching for new particles, precision tests of quantum chromodynamics using W and Z bosons, and calorimetry. She has been the head of the subgroup of the CMS collaboration charged with looking for new particles other than the Higgs and those predicted by Supersymmetry and the subgroup charged with the reconstruction of jets and missing transverse energy. She is a Fellow of the APS.

Please join us for this free event sponsored by the College of Science and Mathematics Dean's Office and the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
