In 1998, an Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore jeans, reasoning she must have helped her attacker remove them. Enraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament launched into action and protested by wearing jeans to the steps of the Supreme Court. Wearing jeans became an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.

Wear denim on Fridays in April and on April 28th to show your support of survivors of sexual assault.

Elevator Pitch Competition | More Info
12:00 AM - ?
Location: Engineering Hall
Contact: Kozachyn@rowan.edu

Elevator pitch is a frequently used term, which literally means ?tell me about your business within the time that it would take to ride up an elevator.? Each year we conduct two contests -- one in the fall and one in the spring -- for students from the Entrepreneurship and Innovation course. Last year's contests involved over 150 students whose pitches were critiqued and rated by a pool of 90+ RU alumni judges. Judges give each pitch feedback on strengths and weaknesses. The 10 top-rated competitors present their two-minute business pitch before a live panel of judges on October 7. The winners are announced at the end of the event. The top three winners are sent to the National Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization Conference located in Chicago, Illinoise. The top winner in the SPRING contest is RU's automatic entry in the national elevator pitch contest. The Fall 2011 CEO conference and pitch contest is to be held in Fort Worth, Texas. To learn more visit: http://www.c-e-o.org/blog/ceo-annual-national-conference/

NOTE:This competition is for those students enrolled in the Rowan University Entreprenuership and Innovation class (ENT 06-240) for the Fall, 2011 semester. If you would like to participate in the national competition, please visit THE CEO Elevator Pitch Competition Website for more information. If selected as a finalist, Rowan University will pay your fee to attend!

The Elevator Pitch Contest showcases the top 10 pitches. Last year's contest involved over 80 students whose pitches were reviewed by 46 alumni judges. Each competitor presented their two-minute business pitch before a live panel of judges and the winners were announced at the end of the event. CHSS Speakers Series: "Philosophical Perspectives on Translational Medicine | More Info
09:25 AM - ?
Location: Student Center 221
Contact: lund@rowan.edu

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Miriam Solomon as she presents "Philosophical Perspectives on Translational Medicine." This event is part of the CHSS Speakers Series and is free and open to the entire Rowan and surrounding community.

Translational medicine attempts to go "from bench to bedside," i.e. from pure research to clinical applications. Dr. Solomon argues that, while "translational medicine" is regarded as a new idea in medicine, the need for translational research in medicine is not in fact new, but it has taken on new urgency and significance for two reasons: the perceived slowness of development of applications of basic research and the need for different research standards than those imposed by another recent paradigm, evidence-based medicine. Thus, translational medicine is best viewed as a response to the perceived shortfalls in both results and methods of mainstream contemporary medicine.

Miriam Solomon is Professor of Philosophy at Temple University. She is also Affiliated Faculty in the Women's Studies Program and serves on the Temple University Hospital Ethics Committee. Her research interests are in philosophy of science, philosophy of medicine, history of science, epistemology, gender and science and biomedical ethics. She is currently writing a book on evidence-based medicine, medical consensus conferences, narrative medicine and translational medicine, titled Making Medical Knowledge.

Sponsored by the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy & Religion, and the Hollybush Institute.

This event is hosted and organized by CSM and opened to all interested Rowan faculty.

Facilitator: Dr. Julie Schell, Senior Research Associate from the Mazur Group at Harvard University's School of Engineering and Applied Science

Workshop #1

An introduction to the flipped classroom

Instructors all over the globe are turning their students' worlds around by flipping their classrooms. In a flipped class, teachers move information coverage out of the lecture hall so that they can better leverage in-class time to address student difficulties and misconceptions. In this interactive session, Dr. Julie Schell will flip the workshop by providing brief introductory, pre-workshop activities to participants. During the workshop, she will discuss the why, what, and how of flipped classrooms by confronting and resolving a series of common myths about flipped teaching. Participants will have an opportunity to share ways in which they have flipped their own classes and learn about two research-based tools to facilitate flipping. (1 hour 15 min.)

Dr. Schell will be flipping the workshop. If you plan to attend this workshop, please spend 10 minutes preparing by completing the registration form at http://bit.ly/flippingtheclass

Workshop #2

Peer Instruction 2.0

Peer Instruction (PI) is a research-based, interactive teaching method that helps instructors engage students in and out of class. The centerpiece of Peer Instruction is the ConcepTest, a short conceptual question that helps elicit, uncover and resolve student misconceptions. "Turn to your neighbor" is the classic catch phrase of PI methodology, whereby after a brief mini-lecture in class, teachers encourage students to think about a question, vote on their answer, and then turn to their neighbor to engage, rather than sit passively in a lecture. In this presentation, we examine three big, open questions frequently posed by Peer Instruction users:

o How do I group students with neighbors to maximize effective conversations?

o Should I ask my students to vote first, before turning to their neighbor to discuss?

o Should I show or tell my students the results of the answer polls before I cue them to turn to their neighbors?

Find out what the experts say and try out their advice in your own classroom. Dr. Julie Schell with facilitate this workshop using a new Classroom Response System called Learning Catalytics, developed at Harvard University. (1 hour)
