The Speaker: Frank P. Di Sanzo is a Distinguished Research Associate in ExxonMobil Analytical Sciences Laboratories in New Jersey. He received a Ph.D. under the direction of Drs. Peter C. Uden and S. Siggia at the University of Massachusessts (Amherst).

Frank has authored and co-authored over 40 publications, including several book chapters and has chaired several symposia at conferences. He is currently Chairman of chromatography and Vice-chairman of mass spectrometry groups at American Standard Testing Materials (ASTM) for development of petroleum related test methodologies. He has written several ASTM methods currently in use for regulation of gasolines and distillates. Frank is an active member of regulatory analytical testing groups that deal with improved regulatory testing, such WSPA-CARB in California and American Petroleum Institute (API).

He currently serves on the Editorial Board of Journal of Chromatographic Science.  For the Journal he has organized several special issues on application of state-of-the art chromatography to petroleum analyses.  He is the coordinator for the petroleum application section of the European-based web-teaching site ‘CHROMEDIA’.

Abstract: Chromatography plays an important role as an analytical tool in the analyses of a wide variety of petroleum and petrochemical feedstocks and products. Major chromatographic techniques include gas chromatography for solutes of sufficient volatility and stability, liquid chromatography for its unique selectivity and amenability to characterization of volatile and non-volatile solutes and supercritical fluid chromatography for its unique stability and detection system. This seminar gives a cursory technical overview and application of selective state-of-art chromatography using such techniques a multidimensional GC (including GCxGC), ultra-fast GC, micro-GC with selective ion mobility detection and selective detection of sulfur and nitrogen. Several applications in the analysis of fuels, such as simulated distillation and the analyses of biodiesel, distillates and heavier boiling streams will be discussed.
