The Speaker: William Borghard received his BS & MS Chemical Engineering degrees from the University of Connecticut (1975/1977) and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University (1980). He joined Mobil R&D in 1980, where he worked in a variety of assignments over the next twenty years, including Exploratory Research, R&D Computing, Long Range Research, Reforming Technical Service, & Catalyst Technology. In 2000, he joined ExxonMobil Research & Engineering as a result of the merger between Exxon and Mobil. His assignments since 2000 have included Catalyst Characterization Team Lead and various catalyst development project team leads.
Abstract: The global catalyst market has grown steadily over the past 10 years and is projected to grow at the same rate through 2011. Zeolite catalysts play an increasing role in Chemicals, Refining, and Environmental Processes. In particular, zeolites have had a significant impact on production of specialty chemicals. It is interesting to note that despite over 100 zeolite structures discovered to date, the vast majority of commercial zeolite-based catalysts are made with only five of them. The predominance of these five structures is due to the knowledge base produced in their development, their compositional and morphological versatility, and efforts to reduce their manufacturing cost. Some basics in zeolite synthesis and characterization will also be discussed.
