Beta Gamma Sigma Constitution

ARTICLE I - NAME

This chapter shall be known as the ROWAN UNIVERSITY Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma.

ARTICLE II - PURPOSES

The purpose of Beta Gamma Sigma is to encourage and honor academic achievement in the study of business and personal and professional excellence in the practice of business.

ARTICLE III - MEMBERSHIP

Section 1. Qualifications

Membership shall be limited to those of high scholarship and of good moral character.

Section 2. Classes of Membership

There shall be the following classes of membership: undergraduate students (juniors and seniors); graduate students; members of the administration, faculty or research staff; and Chapter and Society honoress.

Subsection 1. Undergraduate Students

Candidates for undergraduate degrees in the Rowan University who rank in the upper tenth percentile of their graduating class may be inducted subject to the following paragraphs of this section:

Paragraph 1. Members of the senior class may be inducted at any time during their senior year if their scholarship is sufficiently high to reasonably forecast their ranking in the upper tenth at graduation. Or, they may be inducted within one year after their graduation with their membership recorded as of the date of their graduation. “Senior Standing as a Business Major” will be considered in determining eligibility.

Paragraph 2. Juniors among the highest seven percent of their class may be inducted in the last term or semester of the junior year (75 sh completed). “Junior Standing as a Business Major” will be considered in determining eligibility.

Paragraph 3. Transfer students who meet the qualifications set forth above may be inducted to membership after they have completed a minimum of one full year of work at Rowan University (24 sh of which 12 sh is in business courses), provided their overall record in the judgment of the Rowan University Chapter is of Beta Gamma Sigma caliber.

Paragraph 4. All members inducted under paragraphs 2 or 3 above shall in their senior year be included in the senior class total, and shall be included in the ten percent limitation referred to in Subsection 1 (if they rank in the upper ten percent of the senior class).

Subsection 2. Graduate Students

A new member inducted from among the masters students must rank in the upper twenty percent of those receiving the masters degree during the year. Those masters students who have been previously inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma membership as undergraduates and who rank in the upper 20% of those receiving the masters degree, must be included in the 20% limitation referred to in Article I, Section 1, Subsection 2 of the Bylaws.

Subsection 3. Administration, Faculty and Research Staff

Members of the administration, faculty and research staff in Rowan University School of Business may be inducted to active membership without restriction as to number, but not until the attainment of tenure at Rowan University. For those faculty where tenure is not applicable, invitation to membership may be extended after the individual has completed six years of such work at the Rowan University. A newly appointed president of an institution, dean or Vice-President of Academic Affairs, may however, be inducted to active membership without regard to the foregoing limitations.

Subsection 4. Honorees

Chapter and Society honorees are eligible, if not otherwise Beta Gamma Sigma members, for honorary membership. Such honorary membership shall be designated by an honorary recognition certificate or plaque and the honorary member may wear the Beta Gamma Sigma key.

Section 3. Nomination for Collegiate Chapter Membership

The Rowan University Chapter shall have a nominating committee which shall consist of at least three members, two of whom shall be members of the administration, faculty and research staff of Rowan University. No nominations for election to membership may be made except by the nominating committee.

Section 4. Election to Collegiate Chapter Membership

A three-fourths affirmative vote of those members present at a duly called meeting of the Rowan University Chapter is necessary for election to membership in the Rowan University Chapter.

Section 5. Notice of Election to Membership

Those elected to membership will be so notified by the secretary-treasurer.

Section 6. Transfer of Student Members

A student member of Beta Gamma Sigma, in good standing, who transfers to the Rowan University shall enjoy all the rights and privileges of the Rowan University Chapter, but shall be considered an official member of the chapter in which the student was inducted.

Section 7. Government of Collegiate Chapters

The active (voting) membership of the collegiate chapter shall consist of (1) student members of the collegiate chapter, (2) those members of the Society who are on the administration, faculty and research staff of the school or college of business in which the chapter is located, and (3) the officers of the collegiate chapter.

ARTICLE IV - CHAPTER HONOREE AWARD

The Chapter Honoree award is conferred upon those who have furthered the ideals of the Society through outstanding business and managerial leadership.

Section 1. Nomination for Chapter Honoree Award

The Chapter nominating committee shall nominate candidates for the Chapter Honoree Award. Any person who has achieved distinction primarily in business and administration and who possesses those qualities that Beta Gamma Sigma fosters may be nominated as chapter honoree by the chapter. As many as two chapter honorees in any one year may be awarded without express approval of the Board of Governors. For the third or subsequent chapter honorees, the chapter must seek permission through the Central Office, providing a rationale for such recognition, noting the occasion of the award presentation. Prior to the extending of an invitation to a nominee as chapter honoree, the chapter secretary must provide the corporate office with a completed chapter honoree information form, and a $75.00 (U.S.) fee to help defray the cost of the chapter honoree plaque.

Section 2. Honorees

Chapter and Society honorees are eligible, if not otherwise Beta Gamma Sigma members, for honorary membership. Such honorary membership shall be designated by an honorary recognition certificate or plaque and the honorary member may wear the Beta Gamma Sigma key.

ARTICLE V - OFFICERS

The officers of the Rowan University Chapter shall be president, vice president, and secretary-treasurer. (There may be a secretary and a treasurer if the chapter desires. Also, there may be such other officers as are deemed necessary for efficient operation of the collegiate chapter, e.g., historian, other vice presidents, etc.)

Section 1. Election of Officers

A majority vote of the members present at a duly called meeting of the Rowan University of Chapter shall be necessary to elect officers. Any vacancy caused by resignation or otherwise shall be filled by appointment by the president.

Section 2. Term of Office

The term of office of the secretary-treasurer shall be three years and the terms of the other officers shall be one year.

ARTICLE VI - MEETINGS

Meetings may be called at any time by the president or, if the president's office is vacant, by the secretary-treasurer by means of written notice to the active membership. Written notice of such meetings must be sent at least one week prior to the meeting. There shall be at least two meetings per year. (The following list represents the kind of activities with which collegiate chapters may be concerned. It is recognized that not everything listed will be suitable for all collegiate chapters.)

A possible agenda might include:

  1. electing students of junior class rank to membership;
  2. electing students of senior class rank to membership;
  3. electing graduate students to membership;
  4. electing members of the administration, faculty and research staff to membership
  5. honoring a person who has achieved distinction in business and who possesses those qualities that Beta Gamma Sigma fosters as chapter honoree;
  6. electing chapter officers for the coming year;
  7. electing members of the nominating committee for the coming year; and
  8. conducting other business.

An affirmative vote of three-fourths of the active members who are present and voting at a duly called meeting shall be required and sufficient for the election of new members. Voting privileges shall be limited to active members. A simple majority vote of the active members who are present at a duly called meeting shall be required and sufficient for the election of chapter officers, members of the nominating committee, and delegates to Beta Gamma Sigma biennial convention. Voting shall be by secret ballot if requested by one or more of the voting members present.

ARTICLE VII - FEES

The induction fee for each new member shall be set to accommodate the fee to the Central Office for lifetime membership plus collegiate chapter costs as determined by the Rowan Chapter. This fee provides to those who are inducted the lifetime membership fee, the membership certificate, a lapel pin and honor cord.

ARTICLE VIII - OFFICIAL EMBLEM

The emblem shall be a gold key of such design as is registered in the United States Patent Office on Registry No. 561,939 on July 22, 1952, and as renewed on July 22, 1979.

ARTICLE IX - THE RITUAL

The ritual adopted by Beta Gamma Sigma in 1934 and subject to amendment by the Board of Governors shall be the official ritual used at induction ceremonies.

ARTICLE X - DELEGATES TO BETA GAMMA SIGMA CONVENTIONS

A delegate to each Beta Gamma Sigma biennial convention shall be elected by the Rowan University. The delegate may be any active or alumnus member of the chapter who, after being nominated from the floor indicates a willingness to serve, and is elected at any duly called chapter meeting. The delegate shall be entitled to vote and to represent the chapter on all matters brought before the convention. (A chapter’s delegate could be the Dean, faculty advisor, or other chapter officer who is already attending a meeting in the location where the Biennial Convention is being held.)

ARTICLE XI - FISCAL YEAR

The fiscal year of the Rowan University Chapter shall cover the twelve months ending on June 30.

ARTICLE XII - ANNUAL AUDIT

The financial records of the chapter shall be audited annually at the end of each fiscal year by the financial audit committee. The committee shall report in writing to the president who shall turn the report over to the secretary - treasurer. The secretary - treasurer shall provide the report to the members of the chapter at the next meeting.

ARTICLE XIII - DISTRIBUTION OF ASSETS ON DISSOLUTION

At such time as the Rowan University Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter shall be dissolved, its assets shall revert to a scholarship fund determined by the active members of the chapter at the time of such dissolution. No part of the assets of this organization at dissolution shall inure to the benefit of any person or organization other than the organization before mentioned.

ARTICLE XIV - AMENDMENTS

This constitution may be amended by a three-fourths vote of the members attending a duly called meeting. No amendment to this constitution shall be effective until a copy of the amendment has been filed with the Central Office.
