Greek Affairs at Rowan University

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a Fraternity or Sorority?

A fraternity/sorority is a group of men or women bound together by brotherhood or sisterhood and common goals and aspirations.  The members that form a fraternity or sorority share their efforts, friendship, and knowledge.  Together these members learn, grow, and make the Greek organization stronger.  Their common experience builds ties that last a lifetime.  This forms a brotherhood or sisterhood amongst members which helps to develop strong and creative leadership leading to success.  Greek organizations are known to enhance your educational experience by emphasizing intellectual, interpersonal, and social development.

Are Fraternities and Sororoities just like the ones you see on TV and in the movies?

While Animal House and Legally Blonde are funny movies, they do not accurately depict Greek Life. Greek organizations are diverse and consist of members with many different interests, backgrounds, and majors. Greeks at Rowan University are known for their scholarship, leadership, and community service endeavors.

Do Greek organizations take up a lot of time?

Just like any other activity, the amount of time and energy you put into your Greek membership, the more you will get out of the experience. While membership does require a time commitment, Greeks are known for balancing their time between academics, clubs/organizations, jobs, family, and friends. The time-management skills that are learned from being a part of a Greek organization are invaluable!

What is the financial obligation to join a Greek organization?

Member dues vary widely from chapter to chapter and are typically higher during your first semester of joining. However Greek membership is affordable and most organizations will work with you to determine how to cover the costs through options such as payment plans.
