Running MentorGraphics on your PC
This guide has been compiled in the hopes of aiding ECE students in the installation and use of the MentorGraphics software on their personal computer either on the campus of Rowan University, or from home through the use of the Cisco VPN client. Currently, this guide covers installation only on Windows based PCs, and has been tested and verfied on both Windows XP and Windows Vista. This tutorial has not been tested on Windows 2000; futhermore the installers used in this guide are not compatible with Windows 2000, and we cannot guarantee functionality if you attempt to install on a Windows 2000 computer. A Mac OSX guide will be made available in the near future.

   Windows Installation (XP/Vista)
To begin with, you will need two installers, Xming and the Xming Portable PuTTY programs. These two programs will allow you to connect to the font server on elvis as well as run the MentorGraphics software suite. The program builds at the time of this tutorial write up are as follows:
» Xming 6.9.0.23 (click to download)
» Xming Portable PuTTY 6.9.0.28 (click to download)
For your convenience, the installer versions used in this tutorial are available for download from this site. If you wish to download the latest versions, they can be found at the Xming website, located here.

 » Xlaunch Configuration (1st Step)

You now should install Xming. Running the installer program will give you a screen similar to the one pictured at left (click for larger image). Install the program with the default settings, and repeat the process for the Xming Portable PuTTY installer (once again, with setup defaults).

After you are done with the installation, run Xlaunch by navigating to Start -> Programs -> Xming -> Xlaunch. When the program opens, you will be presented with the screen shown at left. Make sure the option for "Multiple Windows" is selected, and display number is set to "0", then click 'Next" to move on.

The next screen allows you to decide how to start Xming. Choose the "Start no client" option and click "Next" to continue.

Now you will configure the font server so that MentorGraphics software will run properly and display properly on your screen. On this screen, enter "elvis.rowan.edu" (minus the quotes) into the field for "Remote font server" and leave all other options at their default value. Click "Next" to continue.

The final screen allows you to save the configuration you just created. We suggest you save the file to a location on your computer, and run the configuration file in order to run XLaunch with your custom configuration already loaded. Once the configuration file is saved, click "Finish". If Xlaunch is running, you should see the Xlaunch icon in your system tray.

» Xming PuTTY Configuration (2nd Step)

We will now configure the PuTTY program, which acts as a frontend to connect to Elvis. After PuTTY has been installed, navigate to Start -> Programs -> Portable PuTTY -> PuTTY. A screen similar to the one at left will appear. Make sure the "SSH" option is selected, and type "elvis.rowan.edu" (minus the quotes) in the field for "Host Name".

Expand the "SSH" menu on the left by clicking on the [+] sign. Navigate to the 'X11' option. Your screen should like the one shown pictured on the left. Make sure the option for "X11 Forwarding" is checked.

Navigate back to the "session" option on the left, and click in the "Saved Sessions" field. Type anything you wish (we wrote 'Elvis' for the session name) and click save so that your configuration options are saved and you do not have to repeat this process everytime you run PuTTY.

Click on the "Open" button to open the terminal window. You will be prompted to enter your username and password, this is the same username and password you would use when logging on to the Unix computers in the 2nd floor lab. You can now run MentorGraphics programs just as you would normally run them in the lab through the command line prompt. All programs will open in a seperate window.
