What is the Society For Human Resource Management (SHRM)?

SHRM is the largest professional society in the world devoted exclusively to the human resource profession. Founded in 1948, it serves more than 100,000 professional and student members. The Rowan University student chapter was established in 1976 and has been a consistent National Superior Merit Award Chapter. In May, 2000, it received the 1999-2000 Superior Merit Award given to only 60 Chapters of the 330 student chapters nationally.

What is Human Resource Management?

Human Resource Management is a term that refers to managing an organization’s employees through:

  • Employment, recruiting and placement
  • Training and development
  • Compensation and Benefits
  • Employee and labor Relations
  • Health, Safety and Security
  • Workplace Diversity
  • Human Resource Information Systems(HRIS)

Human Resource Management has eight commonly accepted responsibilities:

  • Compensation and Benefits

  • Employment Practices & Placement
  • Workplace Diversity
  • Health, Safety and Security
  • Human Resources Information Systems
  • Human Resource Research
  • Training and Development

MBO Statement

The Rowan University Student SHRM Chapter is dedicated to providing the means for which students who are interested in the human resources field to learn about the profession, gain experience through internships posted, and network with experienced professionals.

Objectives for 2007-2008 year:

  1. To achieve Superior Merit Award
  2. To publish an e-newsletter for club members each month
  3. To publish 1 article in the Echoes Newsletter
  4. To increase student membership by 30% by next year
  5. To compete in the HR games and place in top 10
  6. To have guest speakers at every one of our monthly meetings
  7. To attend sponsoring chapter meetings and workshops
  8. Update the SHRM Web Page twice per school year
  9. Organize and carry out two fund-raising activities
  10. To provide students with the opportunities and knowledge needed to obtain internships in the field of HR
  11. To support the Rowan University Career Fair in achieving an opportunity for students to meet employers for potential full time and internship positions.
