What If They Don't Play Fair?

In Part 1, the authors examine methods of transforming hostile confrontations into win-win situations described in ?Getting to Yes? by negotiation specialists Fisher and Ury. The emphasis is practical advice on dealing with a wide variety of extreme tactics and dirty tricks, and the claim that behaving decently even when the other side behaves badly is usually good strategy. In Part 2, the authors describe their ongoing projects of describing and analyzing Hobbesian environments and exploring ways that cooperative behavior can develop and survive in such environments. They conclude by commenting on the relevance of the work of Fisher and Ury for understanding the viability of cooperative behavior in hostile environments.
