A Relational Framework for Analyzing Ventures in Cognitive Environments: The BP-TNK Experience

Large, well financed companies are likely to seek markets in countries or regions possessing valuable resources despite negative environmental characteristics such as dominance by business clans, poor rule of law, and lack of transparency. This paper presents a framework for understanding the process that firms use to seek market positions in regions dominated or part of the former USSR. The approach is to study the BP-TNK venture through a relational matrix perspective to establish general propositions for business ventures in this region.
