A Functional Linkage between Key Operations Elements - E-Commerce for Productivity and Profitability
E-commerce initiatives can add value to corporations significantly. However, competitive advantage does not come simply from the buying and selling of goods and services via the Internet. The opportunity is to utilize e-commerce to improve operational parameters of the firm. Particularly in a business-to-business (B2B) setting, e-commerce can improve productivity and profitability. This comes through decreased transaction costs, improved inventory control, improved supply chain management, improved customer service, and lower operation costs. It is noteworthy to mention that e-commerce is best implemented through supply chain integration. Supply chain integration will produce more effective results. Furthermore, the results are measurable and realized through efficiency, productivity, and profitability. Although there are many facets of operations management that can be enhanced be e-commerce, supply chain enhancements present some of the largest opportunities. Much of the research will point to supply chain management opportunities.
