Fred Adelson, Ph.D,
Art History Professor
Fred B. Adelson is a professor of art history at Rowan University, where he has been teaching since 1974. He earned his Ph.D. in Art History from Columbia University, writing his dissertation on Alvan Fisher (1792-1863), the American landscape painter. He has curated several exhibitions and written numerous articles and museum catalogs on a broad range of topics from Hudson River school landscapes to contemporary shopping bags. From 1997 to 2006, Dr. Adelson was a frequent contributor to The New York Times, writing art reviews and features dealing with architecture and the arts scene of New Jersey. He has also written entries for such major reference sources as the Grove Dictionary of Art and the Encyclopedia of American Art. Since the late summer of 2011, he has been writing art reviews for the Courier-Post.
In addition, Dr. Adelson was directly responsible for setting up the Seward Johnson Artist Development Travel Scholarship that enables a Rowan art major to spend a full spring semester studying in Florence, Italy. He was also instrumental in bringing Patti Smith, the celebrated singer-poet-artist, back to campus for the first time in 40 years for a reunion performance in 2009.
