College of Humanities & Social Sciences

Welcome to CHSS!

Date: July 1, 2012

Welcome to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which includes eight departments, seven interdisciplinary programs, and the Exploratory Studies Program for students who have not yet chosen a major. Our College was founded in July 2012 when the fourteen-department College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was officially split into two entities:  the College of Science and Mathematics and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS).  We remain the largest of the seven academic colleges within the university and, as the home of the majority of general education courses, we make contact with just about every student who graduates with a Rowan degree.

The disciplines included within our College—English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, Geography & Environment, History, Law & Justice Studies, Philosophy & Religion Studies, Political Science & Economics, and Sociology & Anthropology—provide a broad foundation of knowledge upon which students can build both professional and personal success.  Our expert faculty and dedicated staff work hard to engage students in active learning both inside and outside the classroom, through individual- and team-based problem-solving, collaborative research, field trips, internships, short-term study abroad, and other activities.

The College has chosen as its icon the compass, acknowledging the fact that we equip students with the critical thinking, research, and communication skills necessary to explore the diverse paths presented by dynamic career and life circumstances.  The College motto, "Leading the way to wisdom," further emphasizes that our disciplines form the core of a liberal arts education.

I invite you to explore our website and welcome your questions and comments. I believe that you will be pleased and enriched by what the College of Humanities and Social Sciences can offer.
