In November of 2002, I accompanied a number
of media activists to the town of Opalousas, Louisiana to witness
the building of the only Low Powered FM radio station licensed to
a civil rights organization. KOCZ FM is owned and operated by the
Southern Development Foundation and is at the forefront of a new
wave of radio stations designed to serve the needs of local communities
in the U.S.
This audio documentary
won the Best of Festival Audio Documentary award from the Broadcast
Education Association's Festival of Media Arts in 2004.
