About Writing Arts

The Department of Writing Arts was created in 1967 as the Department of College Writing, adopting the new name in the spring of 2001. As part of our mission to teach writing, we teach the first-year writing classes required by the university, as well as more advanced writing classes. Currently we offer an undergraduate major in Writing Arts, leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication, as well as a coordinate major in Writing Arts with Elementary Education. For Writing Arts majors, the department has a competitive scholarship, given each year to one incoming freshman and one transfer student.

The department also offers an M.A. in Writing with focus areas in composition studies, journalism and creative writing and corporate communication (in conjunction with the Journalism Department).

Other activities of the department include publishing Glassworks, with the best of Rowan student writing in diverse disciplines, and Asphodel, a literary magazine. As part of innovative outreach in teaching writing, the Department of Writing Arts has also teamed up with the College of Engineering to teach technical communication within the engineering context.
