Rowan Literacy Consortium

Join us in creating a vision of tomorrow’s schools. We invite you to become part of the Rowan Literacy Consortium focused on developing literacy leaders. We are excited by the opportunity to bring together the expertise of a group of people committed to literacy and people who believe in the power of teacher-to-teacher sharing and knowledge building. This year-long inquiry will focus on the integration of reading and writing and developing effective strategies and best practices to help all students.

The goal of the series is not simply to make teachers more knowledgeable but to enable them to use their understandings to adapt instruction to fit the changing needs of students and situations. Toward this end, the Literacy Consortium is guided by principles suggested by the International Reading Association and others for developing effective literacy leaders. The collaborative will be:

• Grounded in inquiry and reflection
• Participant driven and collaborative, involving knowledge sharing among teachers within communities of practice
• Sustained, ongoing and intensive

The series will enable four-member collaborative teams to interact with some of the foremost people in the field of literacy as well as with other teachers from the region and professors from Rowan University’s Reading and Writing Arts Departments in order to build their confidence and competence in developing students’ reading and writing integration. Activities include keynote presentations, small-group discussions, taking-back-and-trying-out opportunities and the formation of an action plan for making improvements at their school or district level.

Membership will be limited to 25 teams, admitted on a first come, first served basis.
