Sheltered English Instruction

CPCE received a grant from the New Jersey Department of Education, Division of Student Services, Office of Specialized Populations to provide free training for teachers in Sheltered English Instruction. Sheltered Instruction is specially designed academic instruction that will allow content area teachers the opportunity to make subject matter content accessible to English Language Learners (ELLs) in the inclusive classroom.

Many of us have more and more students who are attempting to learn English, as well as mastering the demanding expectations of our standards based curriculums. Content area teachers who participate in this training will learn instructional strategies designed to accomplish that objective.

To participate, the content area teacher needs to commit to a total of five training dates to further develop the instructional skills that will be introduced. In addition, they (and the building principal) will agree to have a Rowan faculty member visit their classroom to serve in a mentoring role.

School districts are limited to sending teams of two staff members to either the Elementary or Secondary group. First priority will be given to English, Math, Reading, Science and History teachers (for the secondary sessions), but committed teachers in any area who want to improve and assist ELLs are very welcome. Applications will be accepted in the order received until we have a cohort of 25 for each group.
