The Department of Biological Science at Rowan University prepares undergraduate students for a variety of careers and graduate-level scholarship.
Our graduates enjoy an extraordinarily high acceptance rate – between 97 and 100 percent -- into prestigious graduate and health profession programs including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacy, chiropractic care and podiatry.
But why do our grads do so well? There are a host of reasons.
Biology majors enjoy small classes and direct interaction with faculty in a state-of-the-art facility. Lab classes are capped at 24 students and lecture-only courses at 35.
The bottom line -- we simply don’t teach in big auditoriums.
Rowan’s undergraduate-only bio program eliminates competition with graduate students for access to faculty that can exist at other universities. Further, its facilities within Science Hall, a $45-million structure completed in 2004, offer unparalleled research opportunities.
Students majoring in Biological Science have opportunities to study abroad at such exotic locales as the Galapagos Islands and through programs such as Sea Semester. The latter program teaches marine biology and oceanography along with learning how to sail on board one of the program's two 135-foot vessels. Both of these programs enable majors to receive credit for science classes while studying abroad.
Plus, we encourage students to take advantage of unique interdisciplinary studies for the broadest liberal arts education possible.
Our view is that having an interdisciplinary background makes students more flexible as job seekers and scientists. With greater flexibility comes greater opportunities and that’s what a Rowan education is all about.
