Welcome from the Chair

Dr. Gregory Caputo, Associate Professor

856 256-5453 (O),

The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department strives to reach the excellence on innovative educational programs and cutting-edge research. We have made great strides in quality education, providing unique learning opportunities for students and meeting the challenge of industry demands. We prepare our students to be competitive to move on to major graduate programs in the country, medical schools, pharmacy schools as well as other alied health programs. Our graduates have also been well employed by major chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and biomedical laboratories.

The department strongly supports innovation of curriculum to prepare competent majors and encourage fundamental and applied research projects involving our major students. Faculties strive to be awarded research grants from government and private funding agencies. We try to substantiate the major expertise of our faculty in technology areas by bringing in more science clinic projects. We also continue to be involved with interdisciplinary projects such as drug discovery, material sciences, energy, nano-sciences, molecular modeling, biosensor designs and etc. At the same time, we support efforts in developing any applied research projects that may generate benefits to our programs and industry as well as intellectual property. We are especially looking forward to the future growth with great anticipation and excitement.

The department serves over 250 majors and all the students in the College of Engineering as well as all Biological Sciences majors, Physics majors, some math and Computer Science majors. We recently launched our MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree program. We also launched an accelerated degree program (4+1) linking the BS in Biochemistry with the MS in Cell and Molecular Biology at Rowan SOM GSBS.

Distinguishing Features

Our programs are all designed to provide students with vocational training. We focus on hands-on work with the lab and with instrumentation. We are one of the best-equipped departments for undergraduate education in the country. Our programs all include a required capstone experience doing a research project. Students get opportunity to work with faculty on cutting edge research projects.

Academic Programs

We have four degree programs to offer students: BS degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry, a BA in Chemistry and a BS in Physical Sciences/Chemistry for those intending to teach at the high school level, and two professional BS degrees in Chemistry or Biochemistry. Our BS in Chemistry is accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and our BS in Biochemistry is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB).

Student Organizations/activities

American Chemical Society (ACS) – The club sponsors educational trips, annual research poster symposium for South Jersey ACS Chapter, social gatherings, support for attending conferences and chemists’ gatherings. Members participate in Rowan STEM Day, Science Day, National Chemistry Week and Mole Day. Members serve as tutors for the department’s students.
