Dr. Smith studies how people think about and learn physics. Cited by the National Research Council as one of the few examples of physics education research at the upper division, his major work has focused on developing instructional strategies for advanced undergraduate thermal physics courses. Dr. Smith’s current research centers around how students use and reason about mathematics in both introductory and advanced physics courses, and the ways in which they synthesize various pieces of information to form a coherent understanding of a particular topic. Dr. Smith teaches courses across the undergraduate physics curriculum as well as courses on science education methods and discipline-based education research.
