Date: Archimedes & Quest for Theory of Everything

Description:

The Dean's Distinguished Speaker Series presents:

APRIL SERIES:  Archimedes and the Quest for the Theory of Everything

Chris Rorres, Ph.D. Lecturer in Epidemiology, University of Pennsylvania
Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, Drexel University

April 11, 2014
1:45 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Boyd Recital Hall

Twenty-three centuries ago Archimedes showed how complicated physical phenomena, such as his Law of the Lever and Law of Buoyancy, can arise from a few basic assumptions. His seminal work has led to attempts to explain the entire cosmos from a few elementary physical principles. This talk will trace the history of this quest for a "Theory of Everything" and describe some of the unexpected roadblocks it has encountered in the 21st century, such as studies on the limitations of mathematics and the nature of human consciousness.
