Commencement 2014

Date: Main Ceremony Venue Change

A new Commencement tradition begins

Until just a few days ago, the Rowan University community expected to celebrate the 89th Commencement with both Graduate and Undergraduate ceremonies on the University Green at Bunce Hall. But with higher-than-ever numbers of students due to participate in Commencement, we anticipate hosting more than 20,000 students and guests during the course of our two days of ceremonies. The University Green is simply too small to accommodate everyone safely and comfortably.

We apologize for the late notice on the venue change. We believe the academic milestones we celebrate at Commencement should be shared with as many loved ones and friends as possible. Fortunately, Wackar Stadium will be able to accommodate both of our main ceremonies.

Graduate Commencement will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, at Wackar Stadium. Undergraduate Commencement will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 16, at Wackar Stadium.

Growth & change

As in years past, our May Commencement ceremonies include students who completed their degrees in August and December, as well as those graduating in May and those with a few credits to finish in the summer or who have student teaching in the fall. Last year, we were beyond capacity for the Undergraduate ceremony, with standing room only for as many as 1,000 guests. This year, we planned to accommodate more by adding bleachers to the Green, but the number of students participating is expected to grow to nearly 2,500 -- adding many more guests, too.

As most of the Rowan community knows, preparing for Commencement is an enormous task involving hundreds of employees and volunteers throughout many weeks, as well as on the event days in May. The logistics and labor involved are more complicated than ever, so we appreciate you helping students understand the changes.

Quick reference for this year's ceremonies

Undergraduate Commencement main ceremony

All guests must have tickets for admission to both the main ceremony and the secondary college ceremony. Students will be able to print/download three guest tickets for the main ceremony by the May 8 deadline. On May 9, students will be able to request up to three more tickets for the main ceremony through a ticket pool. There will be at least 3,000 tickets available. Any tickets not claimed by May 8 will be added to the May 9 pool. Please note: Students who receive extra tickets to the main ceremony are not guaranteed extra tickets for their secondary ceremony. We believe, however, that the new ticket pool will enable easy transfer of unused tickets to students who need more.

Graduate Commencement main ceremony

Tickets are not needed for the Graduate Commencement main ceremony.

Undergraduate and Graduate Commencement secondary ceremonies

Our secondary ceremonies, where students gather by college, have long presented a seating challenge, with limited tickets because of the capacity of the auditoriums and gymnasiums where those ceremonies take place. Students often passed along unused tickets or requested more.

New this year, students must print/download by the May 8 deadline three guest tickets to an Undergraduate Commencement secondary ceremony or four guest tickets to a Graduate Commencement secondary ceremony. On May 9, students will be able to request more tickets for the secondary ceremonies through a ticket pool (up to three more for undergraduate students and up to two more for graduate students). Any tickets not claimed by May 8 will be added to the May 9 pool. The new ticket pool will enable easy transfer of unused tickets to students who need more.

Undergraduate special needs tickets

Undergraduate Commencement special needs tickets count as main ceremony tickets. If a student reserves special needs tickets for main ceremony guests, these will be subtracted from the total number of main ceremony tickets available per student.

Next steps for students and guests

Students who have confirmed their participation in the Commencement ceremonies also must reserve tickets online by Thursday, May 8 at

Additional tickets will be available (first-come, first-served) through the online ticket pool on Friday, May 9 at 8:30 a.m., at

Caps, gowns and hoods may be purchased at the Rowan Barnes & Noble through May 14. Commencement rehearsal is in Wackar Stadium on Wednesday, May 14, at 9 a.m. for graduate students and 1:30 p.m. for undergraduate. Rehearsal is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended.

Once again, we apologize for the late change in location, but, as always, we are committed to welcoming as many of the Rowan University family as possible to celebrate our students' achievements. We deeply appreciate employees' and volunteers' great commitment to making Commencement successful in its new form and venue. We look forward to establishing new traditions with our 89th Commencement in a few weeks and making the days memorable for graduates, guests and the entire Rowan community.
