3PhysicsmajorMichaelYanakasandProessorMichaelLimdemonstratelasersThesunandsandwerereplacedwithlabsandbeakersforstudentsEduardoBeltranofBridgetonHighSchoolandFredPerryofCumberlandRegionalHighSchool.Howevertheywouldnthaveitanyotherway.TheseniorsinternedthissummerintheChemistryandBiochemistryDepartmentaspartofProjectSEEDaneight-weekprogramsponsoredbytheSouthJerseyChapteroftheAmericanChemicalSocietyACS.StudentsareselectedtoparticipateintheprogramtoexposethemtochemistryinanefforttoheightentheirinterestsinresearchcareerssaidGregoryCaputoAssociateProfessorofChemistryandProjectSEEDPlantsLocalStudentsinLabsforSummerBiochemistrywhospearheadedthisinitiativeatRowan.SupervisedbyTimothyVadenandLeiYuChemistryandBiochemistryAssistantProfessorsthestudentsworkedwithionicliquidsandliquidsaltswhichhavemanyapplicationsincludingpowerfulsolventsandelectricallyconductingfluids.EssentiallytheyaredesignersolventsthatyoucanchangethepropertiestofitdifferentapplicationssaidVaden.AfterresearchingtodeterminehowtomaketheliquidslastlongerandimprovetheirsafetytheaspiringchemistspresentedtheirresultsattheACSnationalconferenceheldinPhiladelphiainAugust.ThesemesterstartedoffwithabigbangforphysicsmajorMichaelYanakaswhowasawardedaNewJerseySpaceGrantConsortiumNJSGCAcademicYearFellowship.AspartofthefellowshipMichaelwillcontinuehisresearchwithDr.MichaelLimAssociateProfessorofPhysicsAstronomytofurtherdevelopacompactgeneratorofultra-shortlaserpulsesaprojectrecentlyselectedbytheUniversityforaprovisionalpatentfiling.HewillpresenthisresearchattheNJSGCConferenceatRutgersUniversityinMay2013.TheobjectiveoftheNJSGCestablishedbyNASAin1991istofurtheraerospaceandsciencethroughthedevelopmentofprogramsforsciencetechnologyengineeringormathSTEMeducationandtofosterresearchanddevelopmentinNewJersey.TopundergraduatestudentsatNewJerseyuniversitiesareselectedforthisaward.AccordingtoYanakasBeingthePhysicsAstronomyDepartmentsselectionforthisfellowshipwasveryexciting.Iamhonoredthattheythoughtsohighlyofmeasastudentandasaresearcher.DepartmentChairandProfessorKarenMagee-SauersaidthatthedepartmentwasveryimpressedwithYanakasacademicabilitiesandpotential.WearehappythatwecanrecognizehisexcellencewiththisfellowshipawardsaidMagee-Sauer.3StudentsEduardoBeltranletandFredPerryrightproudlystandbytheirposterthatwasexhibitedattheACSnationalconerencePhysicsMajorAwardedNASASponsoredGrantCyberThreatNoChallengeforStudentWithcybercrimesrankingrightundernuclearwarandweaponsofmassdestructionasthegreatestthreattonationalsecurityweregladtohaveRowanstudentScottStevensononourteamCongratulationstocomputersciencemajorStevensonandhisteamforcomingoutontopintheUSCyberChallengeeachtakinghomea1000scholarship.WinningteammateHristoAsenovisacomputersciencealumnuswhoiscurrentlypursuinghisPh.D.attheUniversityofDelaware.HeldonthecampusoftheUniversityofDelawareinJulymorethan30studentsfromlocaluniversitiesandhighschoolsreceivedtrainingfromoutstandingexpertsinthefieldofwirelesssecuritycyberethicsanddigitalforensics.U.S.SenatorTomCarperwasonhandtorecognizethestudents.TheInternetisacriticalpartofmostAmericanseverydaylifeandthatsagoodthingbutunfortunatelyitalsomeansthatoureconomyandcriticalinfrastructurearevulnerabletoattacksbyhackers.ThatswherethesebrightstudentscomeinsaidCarper.ScottStevensonrstonletandhisTeamShebangarerecognizedorwinningthecapture-the-fagcompetition.PhototakenbyUniversityofDelawarephotographerEvanKrape
