College of Education - Department of Reading
Department of Reading
The Reading Department offers the required reading courses for all undergraduate teacher education programs. While the department does not offer an undergraduate major course of study, it offers an undergraduate endorsement program which leads to a Teacher of Reading Certificate. Students in this program must complete the requirements for the endorsement in addition to the requirements in a chosen education major course of study.
The mission of the Reading Department is to prepare undergraduate and graduate students to teach reading, to serve the professional community of educators through various activities, to engage in research that will lead to improvements in literacy education and to serve the college in the pursuit of its mission. The Reading Department is also dedicated to improving the reading ability of underprepared college students and to operating a community reading clinic that serves the teaching and community service function of the department. The clinic also serves as a setting for studying and remediating reading disabilities.
