The Master of Arts in Health Promotion Management (MA HPM) Program combines offerings from Rowan’s College of Education and College of Business. It is designed to serve the needs of professionals from a variety of educational backgrounds. The goal of this program is to prepare professionals in corporate, hospital and community health promotion settings for leadership positions within their organizations. Specifically, graduates will be prepared to serve as directors and managers of health promotion programs and facilities in all three settings and as program directors of non-profit and government health organizations. Graduates will be prepared to serve as Directors and Managers of the following types of organizations:
- Corporate wellness/fitness facilities
- Hospital-based wellness/fitness facilities
- Community wellness/fitness facilities
- Non-profit health agencies
- State/county/city Departments of Public Health
Each potential candidate for the program is required to meet with the program advisor to review his or her educational background to determine which prerequisite undergraduate courses he or she will be required to complete. In general, the program prerequisites are:
Human Anatomy and Physiology, 4 - 8 credits
(must include the nervous, muscular, respiratory and cardiovascular systems)
Basic Nutrition, 3 credits
Exercise Physiology with lab, 4 credits
One 3-credit health course (i.e. Contemporary Health or equivalent)
Applicants should have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher for consideration for entrance into the program.
Undergraduate students in the Health Promotion and Fitness Management specialization will have the option to graduate in five years with a master’s degree. To do so, they must meet the following criteria:
1. Students must declare their intent to complete the accelerated master’s program with the department Academic Advisor and Program Advisor in their sophomore year. Transfer students must declare their intent upon matriculation at Rowan University, although it is unlikely that they will be able to complete the program as quickly as a student declaring it in their freshman year.
2. Students must maintain an overall minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 to enter and remain in the accelerated program. Transfer students must have a G.P.A. of 3.0 at their prior institution to enter the program.
3. The GRE will not be required of students who enter the accelerated program and maintain a minimum overall G.P.A. of 3.0 each semester.
4. Students who enroll in the accelerated option but do not maintain an overall minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 and wish to enter the master’s program after graduation must apply to the program again. They will be required to take the GRE as part of the application.
5. Students completing the accelerated master’s program should expect to take some summer courses to complete the program in five years.
6. Students enrolled in the accelerated program will begin taking master’s level courses in their senior year (4th year).
