College of Education - B.S. Athletic Training
Currently, the Rowan University Athletic Training Program (ATP) is a competitive based entry-level program designed to be completed in 4 years, beginning in the freshman year. Professional Phase class size is targeted to maintain an entry of between 16-20 students, depending on the number of clinical assignment spots available, per Professional Phase application period. Only the students falling within the number of clinical slots available will be accepted into the Professional Phase of the ATP. This means that there is a potential for a student to meet all application requirements and still not be accepted in to the Professional Phase of the program. This is because a student’s ranking fell below the number of clinical slots availability number.
All athletic training core courses must be taken at Rowan University. All clinical experiences must be completed within the Rowan University ATP. No clinical experiences or athletic training core courses completed at a previous institution will be transferable to the Rowan University ATP.
Transfer students have the option of completing the program in 4 years. They would follow the sequence of the freshman students. Please see Criteria for Admission and Course Requirement links for more information.
Students transferring with a significant number of credits may choose to complete the program in 3 years. The student’s first year of attendance at Rowan University will be completed as a Pre-professional student, with the last two years being within the Professional Phase of the ATP, provided the student is accepted into this phase of the ATP. Students will be asked to complete two years of Pre-professional Athletic Training core course requirements in 1 year in order to apply to the Professional Phase in the spring of their first year at Rowan University. An example of Athletic Training core course sequence for the transfer student utilizing the 3-year plan is as follows:
PHED35.105 Introduction to Athletic Training
PHED35.219 Pathology & Evaluation of Orthopedic Injuries I
PHED35.238 Pathology & Evaluation of Orthopedic Injuries I – Laboratory Experiences
PHED35.218 Prevention & Care of Orthopedic Injuries
PHED35.220 Pathology & Evaluation of Orthopedic Injuries II
PHED35.239 Pathology & Evaluation of Orthopedic Injuries II – Laboratory Experiences
PHED35.334 Advanced Emergency Care
All transfer students must also complete observational experiences within the athletic training room. These observational experiences are associated with PHED35105, PHED35219 and PHED35220 and will be a part of their grade for each of these classes. Three-year plan students must complete observational experience requirements for each class separately.
All other pre-requisites must also be met before the transfer student is eligible to apply to the Professional Phase of the ATP in the spring of their first or second year at Rowan University. Please remember, being accepted to Rowan University does not automatically indicate that a student will be accepted into the Professional Phase of the ATP. Please see Criteria for Admission link for more information.
