Academic Requirements
The Health Promotion and Fitness Management undergraduate specialization was awarded the Distinguished Undergraduate Program Award for 2010 by the National Wellness Institute. The Award committee reviewed 278 health promotion undergraduate programs in the U.S. and selected three to receive this award in its inaugural year.

What are the requirements for acceptance in the HPFM specialization?
- Apply to the program during the semester you take the Foundations of HPFM course.
- Complete the written application/self-assessment provided in the Foundations of HPFM class.
- Successfully pass the PRAXIS I basic skills test of reading, writing and math. This is a standardized test administered at sites both on and off campus. A complete description of the test and passing scores is available from Mr. Pinckney or Dr. Spencer.
- Complete an interview with HES faculty once you have completed the written application.
What are the requirements for graduation?
- You must complete 122 semester hours of the required course work described in the following section. Any substitute courses or transfer credits must be approved by Mr. Pinckney.
- You must complete 80 Professional Contact Hours (outside of classroom activities) prior to registering for Field Experience in HPFM. These hours may be earned through paid or volunteer work in the health promotion field, attending and presenting at conferences and active involvement in professional organizations. - You must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 in General Education, 2.75 in HES Core courses and 3.0 in HPFM specialization courses. A "C-" or better must be earned in all HES Core, HPFM specialization and General Education courses.
- You must apply for graduation during your final semester through Mr. Pinckney's office.
- To participate in the May graduation ceremony, you must have satisfactorily completed all requirements with no more than 12 credits left to take (including 6 for the field experience) during the summer session only.
What courses do I need to take?
- Courses fall into three categories. General Education courses (60 credits) are required of all Rowan students. The HPFM specialization requires an additional 62 credits.
