We are a club for all majors, not just engineers!

What We Do
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is a service organization that offers students an opportunity to utilize their knowledge and skills to solve real world problems in third world countries. The mission of EWB is to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve by implementing sustainable engineering solutions.
These projects may include providing clean drinking water, safe transportation, sanitation, and shelter, or establishing industry. Students travel to work on projects in places such as El Salvador, Honduras, Senegal, Thailand, and The Gambia.
EWB projects are focused on engineering problems and many of our members are engineering students, but successful projects require more than just engineering skills, and all types of students are encouraged to participate.
Professors and professional mentors with years of experience guide a multi-disciplinary team of students as they take leadership roles and important design decisions. Completing these projects requires a great amount of time and dedication, but the rewards are even greater. The smiles on the faces of a mother and her child who have been given the gift of clean drinking water leave an everlasting impression on the members whose hard work provided the water.
EWB projects provide students with the opportunity to establish worldwide relationships. The people of the communities we help welcome us with open arms, and are extremely grateful for our help. We are given the opportunity to experience their culture firsthand, and develop personal relationships with the community members. The students and community members come from very different backgrounds but are still able to work together to accomplish our goals and improve the quality of life of hundreds of people.
EWB-USA Mission Statement
“Engineers Without Borders – USA supports community-driven development programs worldwide through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while fostering responsible leadership.”
History
The EWB chapter at Rowan has taken on projects in Honduras, Thailand, South Dakota, El Salvador, and Senegal since we were established in 2003. Our first project was completed in 2004 and provided the village of La Habana, Honduras, with a supply of water for irrigation and a wastewater system. In 2005, a similar water system was installed in Ban Patung, Thailand. The system consisted of two miles of PVC piping that brought water to a new fiberglass tank at the top of the village. In 2006, the Rowan EWB Student Chapter helped the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe overcome some design challenges. The first goal was to develop a design guide for a commercial fish production facility to produce 100,000 pounds of fish annually. The second goal involved the desalination of two wells
