Labeling Slides

Landscape(Horizontal) Slide
Portrait(Vertical) Slide
Landscape (Horizontal)
Portrait (Vertical)

The front and back of a slide are called the "base" and the "emulsion" sides. The side to label is the base. This is the side that displays your image in it's correct orientation (not backwards). The base side is smooth and shiny. The emulsion side will also be somewhat shiny, but close examination will reveal a wavy pattern caused by the dyes used to produce the color.

You can purchase labels for use in most computer printers at office supply stores. You will also find the red dots that indicate orientation at these stores. Avery is one manufacturer that makes both labels (#5267) and red dots (#05790). Some software such as WordPerfect, comes with a template for the slide labels. Make sure your labels are applied correctly. An edge that sticks up will jam a slide projector and ruin your presentation.

If you don't have access to a computer with a printer label them by hand directly on the slide mount. Use a fine point Sharpie marker or another brand of permanent marker. Print clearly and legibly.

If you don't have red dots use a red permanent marker to make them. A red ink pad for rubber stamps and a pencil with a good eraser can also substitute. Ink the end of the eraser and apply it to the slide mount.

Note: The red dot is always placed in the lower left hand corner when viewed in the correct orientation. If it's in the wrong place your work will be seen sideways or upside down. It's also used as an aid in quickly loading slide carousels. The person loading your work may not even look at your image. They expect that you have placed the dot correctly.

Number your slides in the upper right hand corner as they will be presented in the slide sheet. Left to right and row by row from top to bottom. The number one slide will be in the upper left and number twenty in the bottom right.

The last thing to put together is a slide list. Using the numbering sequence from your slides type a list with the same information on your slides. You may also include a description of how you made your art. This is a technical description about process, not a conceptual one. If you wish to include conceptual ideas put them on a separate document. At the top of the slide list type your name and address, your school and your application situation (first year or transfer student).

Your slide list should look like this:
Name
Address
School
First year/Transfer
1) Title, date, medium, dimensions, description.
2) Title, date, medium, dimensions, description.
3) Title, date, medium, dimensions, description.
