Spring 2007 Look for Dual-boot (XP and OSX) test systems in labs
Yes, that's right! Spring 2007 we will install a select few dual-boot test systems. The goal is to begin to set the groundwork for implementing CAD/CAM capabilities within the Westby Computer Art Labs in order to offer the technology within jewlery and sculpture courses. Thanks to the help of our friends in Engineering, this semester (Fall 2006) we ran our first jewlery CAD/CAM course, which was located in one of the Engineering computer labs. Fall 2007 we hope to bring this course back to Westby Hall in closer proximity to the jewlery and sculpture studios.

The dual-boot systems will allow us to offer CAD/CAM capabilities and increase flexibility through access to more industry standard and open-source software. The OS X platform will include all standard lab software, such as Adobe CS2 and Studio 8. The Windows XP environment will include the CAD/CAM software Rhino and Flamingo, in addition to various industry and open-source applications.

Backup Your Work on Lab computers
Lab computers are not intended to store student files for any period of time. When a computer needs repair or updates, the hard drive may be erased and we will not be responsible for lost data. Utilize your network hard drives (Neptune.Art and your H: drive), Zip disks, CD-Rs, flash and external hard drives, or other devices for storage of your files.

Color Laser and Wide Format Printer News
Our production level Canon imageRUNNER iR-C3200, is online and fully operational. We can print on a variety of supplied papers (including thick and glossy stock) and can print double-sided single sheets or multi-page documents or saddle-sticked books. Please note, all print jobs must be submitted through our work flow system. To learn our procedure for printing, please see our Color Printing Guide. And pease keep in mind, there is generally a 24 hour turn around.

We currently have two wide format printers – the Epson 9800 44" wide printer and the Epson 4000 17" wide printer – available for Art student course or portfolio projects. Both printers product crisp contrast, rich intense colors with extremely fine print resolution. Both printers utilize ICC printer profiles in order to produce accurate and consistent color. To learn our procedure for printing, please see our Color Printing Guide. And pease keep in mind, there is generally a 24 hour turn around.

Network Hard Drives
Aside from every student and faculty member's H: Drive, Art students and faculty members also have a personal Neptune.Art account, which can hold up to 1 GB (gigabyte). If a student does not have access to their Neptune.Art account, it may not be set up yet. Please ask your instructor to electronically submit your name to Mike Benson, then read how to access your account using your student webmail ID and password.
