Students submit work from five (5) major studios. A complete application will include six (6) pieces that demonstrate aesthetic and technical achievement. Work from other studios is encouraged to be submitted to help evaluate the application. All work must be presentation ready. After acceptance into the BFA in Art program, the student works with their primary studio advisor and their academic advisor. The student is to develop studio ideas that could be the basis for work submitted in the Work in Progress Review and the Senior Thesis Exhibition. Students will work in various studios with an emphasis on two primary studios. After completing 3 semesters of course work in the chosen primary studio the BFA student may submit work for a Work in Progress Review. The primary studio advisor of the student and other members of the studio art faculty will conduct the Work in Progress Review. This review is followed by with the Senior Thesis Exhibition. At the time of the Work in Progress Review, students must submit 4-6 pieces, presentation ready, for adjudication and inclusion in an exhibition of all Work in Progress Review candidates. Students will show proficiency in at least two techniques or processes and some relationship to intent, image and artistry. The work displayed in the Work in Progress Review should be of the same genre that the student wants to display in their Senior Thesis Exhibition. Students who do not pass the Work in Progress review will consult with their primary studio advisor, and prepare to resubmit work the following semester. At the end of the senior or fourth year, all BFA in Art students must complete a Senior Thesis Exhibition before graduation. A student must choose three (full-time) faculty members, including their primary studio advisor to jury their exhibition. Students will write a Statement of Intent of at least 2 type written pages. The Statement of Intent will be of an acceptable intellectual level so as to allow the faculty jury to develop a reasonable standard for evaluation. The Statement of Intent will include selection of art works (including intent and imagery), installation requirements, publicity, costs, and a timeline for student to follow. The Statement of Intent should be given to the faculty jury one semester before the Senior Thesis Exhibition will take place. Students will present an Exhibition, at the specified time, including work completed during their last four semesters. Works completed in the core program or studio level 1 classes are not acceptable for the Senior Thesis Exhibition. Included in the Senior Thesis Exhibition is a Thesis Statement and Slide Portfolio. The statement should be a minimum of 2 typed pages in the form of an essay or dissertation as evidence of their own art and its relationship to a philosophy of, or sensibility about, their work in a broad framework of contemporary art. Students will be able to address such items as imagery, technique, and future plans in the statement. One month before the exhibition, students will present their work to the primary advisor for approval. One week prior to the official opening of the exhibition the student will give a copy of the thesis statement to each member of the exhibition jury. At the installation of the exhibition, students must give their primary studio advisor a copy of their Thesis Statement and a Slide Portfolio that consists of 20 slides of work included in the Senior Thesis Exhibition. The number of art works in the exhibition is to be negotiated with the primary studio advisor.
