The Maynard Ferguson Institute of Jazz Studies at Rowan University is proud to announce the first Rowan Jazz Camp to be held July 13 – July 17, 2008. This camp will feature Rowan’s jazz faculty and guest artists.
The Rowan Jazz Camp will offer students from New Jersey and surrounding states a chance to study with some of the region’s finest educators and performers. During this dynamic five-day camp, students will learn big band and small jazz combo techniques as well as improvisation, and other musicianship skills necessary for today’s jazz students ages 14 – 18, who will become tomorrow’s performers.
Rowan University, the Department of Music, and The Maynard Ferguson Institute of Jazz Studies will host the Rowan Jazz Camp. Students will study in the spacious Wilson Music Building which houses Pfleeger Concert Hall, Boyd Recital Hall, two large rehearsal rooms, numerous smart classrooms, and over 80 practice rooms. The large amount of rehearsal and practice space will allow students to perform in many different musical settings from small combos to full big bands. In addition, students will perform in master classes, attend classes in music theory, jazz improvisation, MIDI technology, and special sessions dedicated to issues unique to each instrument.
Classes will cover a vast array of topics, including but not limited to: Latin rhythms for drum-set, introduction to MIDI (including Finale, Smart Music, Sibelius, Garage Band and Band in a Box), preparing for college auditions, practice techniques, the business of music, transcribing, and keyboard harmony.
Students will be housed in Rowan University dormitories and will eat in the newly renovated Student Center Dining Hall. Rowan University music students and Rowan University Campus Security will provide dormitory and campus supervision.
