Dr. Leslie Elkins

Leslie Elkins teaches several courses including Dance History, World Dance Forms, Creative Dance for Children, and Elements of Dance. Her teaching experience also includes core dance courses as well as Contact Improvisation and Movement Improvisation at Temple University and the Susan Hess Dance Studio in Philadelphia. She has earned her Ph.D. in Dance at Temple University, and her dissertation, Body-Presence: Lived Experience of Choreography and Performance, was a phenomenological-hermeneutic study involving her work with two Philadelphia-based artists. It includes a pilot study, "Spiraling Into Meanings: Interpretations of Fire and Burn," about her experiences working with noted postmodern choreographer, performer, author and teacher Deborah Hay and Philadelphia-based performance artist Grace Mi-He Lee. Prior to her doctoral work, Leslie earned a Master of Education in Dance from Temple University and a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from Columbia College in South Carolina. As a dancer in Philadelphia, she was a member of GENGHIS Dance Company and has worked with and performed for Grace Mi-He Lee, Deborah Hay, Merian Soto, Ann Vachon, Melanie Stewart, Tania Isaac, and Paule Turner. She also spent five years as the Newsletter Editor for the Philadelphia Dance Alliance.
