Graduate Assistantships for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Welcome to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The following graduate assistantships (GAs) are available for Academic Year 2012-13:
Mathematics
Halftime Graduate Assistant
Two Halftime GA Positions Available
Graduate assistants will be expected to perform up to two of the following tasks:
Tutoring: The graduate assistant will work with professors teaching middle and upper level mathematics courses to arrange a schedule of drop-in tutoring sessions. He/she will conduct the sessions, coordinate undergraduates who work in tutoring, and provide feedback to those teaching the courses.
Mentoring and Advising: The graduate assistant will work with members of the graduate committee and the teachers of advanced courses to introduce students to the possibilities and advantages of graduate study in mathematics. The graduate assistant will also interact with undergraduate students through our Math Club to inform them of the nature of graduate study at Rowan from a student's perspective. The graduate student will also help coordinate the advising structure in the Mathematics Department.
Technology Support for Students and Faculty: The graduate assistant will provide a support desk inside Mathematics Learning Resource Center (MLRC) to help students use Texas Instruments graphing calculators (TI-83, TI-84, and TI-89) and mathematical and statistical software packages (Mathematica, SPSS, JMP, Fathom, and Geometer's Sketchpad) required in math courses. The graduate assistant will also provide technical support for faculty and work with the IT center to ensure that necessary mathematical software is installed and properly working in TEC classrooms and computer labs throughout campus.
Computer Science
Graduate Teaching Assistant
This is a calendar-year position (12 months), starting in fall 2012, with a stipend of $500 per month and up to 9 credits tuition coverage per semester, renewable for an additional year, based on satisfactory performance and progress.
Duties (20 hours per week):
- Assist in teaching one or two computer science graduate courses per semester (including summer)
- Provide technical assistance (software/hardware) to course instructors
- Hold weekly office hours
Opportunity for guided cutting-edge research:
- Develop a Master's Thesis in Information Visualization under close faculty guidance
- Travel to present research at international conferences
Ideal candidate will have:
- B.S. in Computer Science or a related field, with a of GPA 3.3 or better
- Strong technical skills in multiple areas of computer science
- Strong programming skills
- Strong mathematical background
- Willing to apply and enroll full-time into the M.S. in Computer Science at Rowan University, starting in fall 2012

Computer Science
Graduate Research Assistant
This is an academic-year position (9 months), starting in fall 2012, with a stipend of $1000 per month and up to 9 credits tuition coverage per semester, renewable for an additional year, based on satisfactory performance and progress. Summer stipend negotiable.
Duties (20 hours per week):
- Lead a student team of three on applied systems engineering research and development projects
- Interact with CMMI 5 defense industry experts
- Provide technical assistance to industry projects; full lifecycle systems development
- Develop advanced algorithms to solve real-world problems
- Contribute to research papers
- Provide weekly status reports to supervisors
