Speaker: Dr. April Blakeslee, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Edgewater, Maryland

Title: Using parasites and genetics to resolve invasion histories

Littorina littorea (the common periwinkle snail) is the most abundant intertidal snail along the Northeast North American coast; however, its status as native or non-native in North America has been debated for over 100 years, thus the species has been considered cryptogenic in the Western Atlantic. This investigation uses multiple lines of evidence, specifically parasites and genetics as tools, to piece together the species’ North American history and resolve its cryptogenic status.

Time: Wednesday, March 23, 2011, 10:50- 12:05pm

Location: Science Hall 126
