The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers small class sizes and the opportunity to participate with faculty in research. Accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS), the BS in Chemistry features study in organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, and polymer chemistry. The degree requires a formal research experience. The BS in Biochemistry program was constructed following the recommendations of the American Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists. It, too, features a capstone research experience. We also offer a BS in Physical Sciences jointly with the Department of Physics and Astronomy. That program features a chemistry specialization and a physics specialization with each leading to high school teaching certification when combined with the BA in Education.

It is no overstatement to say Rowan has one of the best-equipped undergraduate labs in the country. Chemistry majors regularly use sophisticated instruments such as a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer and a fourier transform superconducting nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. Such equipment is often reserved for faculty and graduate research at larger universities but you'll begin using it freshman year. And you'll work in a brand-new, $45 million facility designed specifically for scientific study and research.
