The Speaker: Jason Nicols is a member of Michael Doyle's research group at the University of Maryland.
The Talk: Dirhodium caprolactamate [Rh2(cap)4] catalyzes allylic and benzylic oxidation with 0.1 – 1.0 mol% catalyst loading in combination with an inorganic base and tert‑butylhydroperoxide (TBHP). The disproportionation products of TBHP (i.e., tBuO and tBuOO) are not the principle H‑atom abstraction moieties. A mixed-valent dirhodium-oxo complex is implicated as the active oxidant and oxygenation is proposed to occur through an alkyl radical or carbocation intermediate. Methodologies have now been developed for enamide oxidation with a wide range of substrates and functional groups. In addition, selective peroxidation and oxidative carbon-carbon bond (C-C) formation has been achieved with dirhodium catalysis and preliminary results will be presented. A straightforward and high-yielding procedure for the synthesis of Rh2(cap)4 will be described that requires no chromatographic purification.
