Novartis
"New Challenges in Drug Discovery and Development"
Tuesday, February 15, 2000
The Speaker:
Ray Bakhtiar is a Senior Scientist at at the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research. Dr. Bakhtiar obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Arkansas. He received his Ph.D. from North Dakota State University with Professor D. B. Jacobson. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory, a National Laboratory, with Dr. R. D. Smith. He then held faculty position at the Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, NJ) and scientist position at the Merck Research Laboratories (Rahway, NJ). Since 1998, he has been a Senior Scientist at the Novartis. He has significant contribution in the area of bio-diagnostics aiding drug discovery with numerous publications (56). He is also a dynamic advocator for bioanalytical mass spectroemtry with 90 presentations.
The Talk:
The tremendous progress in biomedical sciences has been made possible in part by recent advances in bioanalytical methods, in particular biological mass spectrometry. Since the introduction of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS] and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), the field of bioanalytical MS has seen a rapid growth. In concert with separation techniques such as capillary electrophoresis (CE) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), mass spectrometry allows characterization of a large array of small organic molecules, peptides, proteins, oligonucleotides, and RNA fragments. Thus, substantially more expedient and definitive determination of molecular weight (MW) is now possible by mass spectrometric analysis. In this presentation, general descriptions of the ESI- and MALDI-MS will be discussed. Furthermore, several recent developments and applications in addressing difficult biological problems are discussed.
