The talk:

We have explored the use of computational tools including: fragment mapping, database mining, and transition state modeling in the design of ligand architectures for asymmetric synthesis. The development of chiral auxiliaries and catalysts by screening stereochemical descriptors against three-dimensional databases such as the Cambridge Crystallographic Database will be presented. For example, novel chiral ligands based upon a cis-decalin core have been identified using this method. Bifunctional chiral catalysts consisting of salen metal complexes incorporating Bronsted or Lewis bases were also designed and have proven effective in asymmetric Michael reactions and the asymmetric alkylation of aldehydes and ketoesters.
