November 16, 1999
The Speaker:
Dr. Z. Helena Qi is a senior research scientist at Center of Expertise Cyclodextrins of Cerestar USA, Inc. She obtained a B.S. in Chemistry and a M.S. in Biochemistry in China, and received her Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from Purdue University. Cerestar, a company of Eridania Béghin-Say, is the largest producer of cyclodextrins in the world and a leader in the research and development of cyclodextrin technology and its applications. During her 8 years at Cerestar USA, Dr. Qi has developed a series of new products of cyclodextrin derivatives, developed techniques for optimzing the complexation efficiency, and conducted numerous studies to tailor cyclodextrin applications to the specific needs of customers. In addition, she has authored more than a dozen cyclodextrin-related publications including patents and book chapters.
The Talk:
Cyclodextrins are a series of cyclic oligosaccharides produced from starch. Discovered over 100 years ago, cyclodextrins remained a laboratory curiosity until the late 1970s when their potentials for commercial applications began to be realized. Presently a-, b-, and g-cyclodextrins are produced on the industrial scale, all of which possess a molecular shape resembling a truncated cone with its hydrophobic cavity and hydrophilic exterior. This unique structure enables cyclodextrins to entrap various ÔguestÕ molecular entities to form inclusion complexes that contains no covalent bonds. Upon formation of such supramolecular complexes properties of the guest compound can be modified, leading to various practical advantages, such as enhanced stability and increased aqueous solubility. The talk will present an overview of the chemistry of cyclodextrins and their exciting and wide application areas.
