"A Typical Serine Proteases of the Complement Cascade:
Drug Design and Therapeutic Potential"

Tuesday, September 21, 1999

The Speaker:

Stephen T. Furlong is a Senior Research Bioscientist with AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals at Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Furlong received a BA degree in Biology from Saint Michael's College; a MS degree in Biology from Southeastern Massachusetts University and a Ph.D. degree in Biology from Michigan State University. Dr. Furlong did his Postdoc. and Research Fellow in Harvard Medical School. There, he also held a Research Professor in Department of Rheumatology and Immunology. Dr. Furlong joined AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals 1997 as a senior research bioscientist. He is currently leading the efforts to discover the therapeutic drugs against complement-related diseases. Dr. Furlong contributed numerous papers in major biomedical journals.

The Talk:

The complement cascade plays a central and crucial role in normal function of the immune system. Dysregulation of the complement cascade, however, is a feature in many disease-related pathologies. This talk will provide an overview of the complement cascade and examples of complement-related diseases. We will also discuss two approaches taken at AstraZeneca to discover drugs that effectively inhibit complement activation and which could provide therapeutic benefit. One of these approaches may not only help design drugs that inhibit complement activation, but also provide information useful in the design of serine protease inhibitors, generally.
