1. For each course that you want to include in your GPA calculation, you must determine the number of
Quality Points (qpoints) you achieved.
Convert the letter grade into a number:
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0
+ means add 0.3
- means subtract 0.3
e.g. A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
C- = 1.7
Multiply that number by the number of credits the course was worth to get qpoints
e.g. A- in a 3 credit course = 3.7 * 3 = 11.1 qpoints
A- in a 4 credit course = 3.7 * 4 = 14.8 qpoints
B in a 2 credit course = 3 * 2 = 6 qpoints
2. Your GPA is computed by dividing the number of quality points that you have by the total number of
credits you have.
Example: Suppose you wanted to know what your GPA is in your communication general education courses, and
suppose you got an A in public speaking, a D in college comp 1 (but then you signed up for it again, you filled out
the form in the registrar’s office to replace the grade, and got an A-) and a B+ in college comp 2. (Note that these are
all 3 credit courses).
Qpoints for public speaking (A) = 4 * 3 = 12
Qpoints for comp 1 (A-) = 3.7*3 = 11.1 (since you had the grade replaced, you use the A-)
Qpoints for comp 2 (B+) = 3.3 * 3 = 9.9
Total Qpoints = 12 + 11.1 + 9.9 = 33
Total Credits = 9
GPA = 33 / 9 = 3.667
IMPORTANT NOTES
1. To compute your GPA for two semesters, you can NOT just take the mean of the GPAs for each semester.
You must compute:
(qpoints for semester 1 + qpoints for semester 2) / (credits for semester 1 + credits for semester 2)
2. To computer your Computer Science GPA for graduation, you need to include your CS required and
restricted electives together with college comp 1. Note that some classes required for the major (e.g.
Computers and Society or your Science courses) are not included in this computation.
