Landscape Change Research This interactive map is part of a collaborative project between Rowan University department of geography and the Center for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis at Rutgers University to map and analyze urban growth and open space loss in New Jersey. New Jersey Land Development Viewer Land is being developed in New Jersey at the rate of over 15,000 acres per year (40 football fields per day). This development viewer provides a means of visualizing the remarkable magnitude of growth that has occurred during the past 2 decades. Use the mouse on the main map to pan and zoom to a location of interest. A single click will render the aerial photo map on the right for that location. The color overlay indicates the time period of development. Development that is not overlaid with a color is the most recent occurring after 2002.

The map window displays data simultaneously from several different servers. The large file sizes and variations in server usage and network traffic can cause complete rendering to vary in speed. There are also occasional misalignments of the various map layers.
The land use change tiles are rendered using Mapserver and cached using Tilecache. The satellite imagery and aerial photography utilized in this NJ development viewer is from Google Maps and Virtual Earth. The image dates are generally from 2007 although individual image dates do vary. The both aerial photography databases are updated periodically with best available imagery.
The urban growth mapping was extracted from New Jersey's digital Land Use/Land Cover database developed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Data can be freely downloaded and complete meta-data for the database can be found on NJ DEP's GIS page.
