Step-by-Step Guide

In addition to the counselors available at the International Center, we have compiled this helpful guide to Study Abroad.

1. Research study abroad programs
If you have not done this already, visit our clickable world map. Programs are organized by region and academic programs. In addition to the bilateral and direct programs offered through the International Center, Rowan is a member of the New Jersey State Consortium for International Studies (NJSCIS). NJSCIS has its own bilaterals, and is also affiliated with CCIS, CEA and ISA. Each of these affiliate organizations require a separate, downloadable application. Most students prefer programs that are listed as NJSCIS student exchange programs because they are typically the least expensive. Prices for CEA and ISA programs generally include tuition, housing, excursions and all or at least some meal costs.  CCIS programs are often reasonably priced, however, students are often required to pay housing and other fees directly to their host school.

2. Meet with a Study Abroad advisor
After you have met with your advisor and devoted time to surfing the web, visit the International Center to discuss preferences and interests, decide on an institution, and review the application requirements. Most students will be able to get their first choice of schools. Students interested in going to certain countries should turn in their application as soon as possible so they can begin the visa process early enough.

3. Print out the application packet and the Study Abroad Handbook
The International Center provides a downloadable application packet and checklist. Print and fill out the necessary application materials for the institution you plan to attend, i.e., Rowan bilateral, NJSCIS, CCIS, CEA and ISA.  For all programs that are not Rowan bilaterals, there are additional online forms that must be filled out and can be found here.  You will need to create an account on the NJSCIS website in order to complete these forms. The application deadline for most of these programs is March 1 for Fall and September 24 for Spring.  Some programs have earlier deadlines.  Contact the International Center for more information.

4. Select courses and meet with your department advisor
Once you have decided on a program, visit that institution's web site in order to locate specific information about courses offered during the semester you will be abroad. If possible, print out these course descriptions. Schedule an appointment with your advisor to select 4-6 courses that meet your major, minor, concentration, or general education requirements. Your goal is to find courses you can take abroad that will fit into your Rowan degree program.  Double majors should meet with BOTH of their advisors. All courses that you are approved to take abroad will transfer into your program.

5. Get references
Provide a recommendation form included in your application packet to three Rowan Professors or advisors.   It is also acceptable for the third reference to be from a professional relationship (i.e. boss, highschool teacher, etc). Completed recommendations can be returned by you in a sealed and signed envelope (preferred) OR mailed directly to the International Center in Robinson 117.

6. See your doctor
Included in your application packet is a Medical Evaluation Form.  This must be completed and signed by a physician before you are allowed to Study Abroad.  It is not always necessary to vsit your doctor, if he/she is willing to comment on your general health, your doctor may fax the completed form to 856-256-5676.

7. Order a transcript
Visit the registrar and order an official transcript to be sent to the International Center, Robinson 117.  Additionally, if you have attended and received credit from ANY other college or university, an original transcript from that institution is required.

8. Write a personal essay
Prepare a one-page (ca. 300 words) typed, personal essay. The essay can include a discussion of:
         1. Your background and preparation for Study Abroad
         2. Reasons why you selected this particular program
         3. Goals you hope to achieve by studying overseas
         4. The relationship of Study Abroad to your college program (i.e. how you will use the credits)
         5. The connection between your Study Abroad experience and your plans for lifelong learning.

9. Submit your application packet
Submit your completed packet to the International Center in Robinson 117 by the deadline. Be sure to make a copy for yourself.

See the included Application Checklist to be sure your application is complete. The final packet must include but is not limited to:
         1. Your application
         2. Your application essay
         3. An OFFICIAL transcript
         4. Three recommendations in sealed and signed envelopes if delivered personally
         5. The Academic Advisement Form with course approvals
         6. A check or money order for $350 payable to NJSCIS
*This fee is not required of students attending a Rowan bilateral or direct program.

10. Submit your financial aid forms
If you are applying for financial aid, you must submit a FAFSA form by the deadline. The Study Abroad advisor can assist you in completing the Budget Statement form included in your application packet. The International Center will submit that form to the Financial Aid Office after you submit your completed packet.

11. Insurance
All Study Abroad students must have international health insurance.  Some programs include this insurance and others offer it for an additional fee.  If your program does not include this option, you can purchase HTH WorldWide insurance through the International Center and you will be provided with insurance cards before their departure.

12. Make travel plans and obtain a passport
Use the Internet or your travel agent to reserve your flights. If you do not yet have a passport, apply for one as soon as possible.  Some countries require that international students secure a student visa before entering the country.  The International Center will advise students on whether this will be necessary.
Click here for information on applying for a passport.

13. Attend the pre-departure meeting
You MUST attend a pre-departure meeting in the fall or spring before your departure. Parents or other interested parties are also welcome to attend.
