Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society

In fall 1997, Phi Beta Delta, the honor society for international scholars and students, charted a new chapter, called Delta Lambda, at Rowan University. Phi Beta Delta was established in 1986 in an effort to recognize the scholarly achievement of international students and scholars, U.S. students who have studied abroad, and faculty and staff involved in international activities. The society aims to foster the development of academic-based international programming and provide a network for faculty, staff, and students involved in international affairs. Every year a $500 scholarship is awarded to a deserving member.

This honor society accepts applications from the following:

  • Students who have completed a Study Abroad Program and have a G.P.A. of 3.1 or above.
  • Upper division students pursuing a foreign language major or minor with a G.P.A. of 3.1 or above.
  • Students pursuing an International Studies or Asian Studies concentration with a G.P.A. of 3.1 or above.
  • Faculty who are active in research or teaching related to international studies.
  • Staff who are active in planning programs related to international studies.
  • International students who have been at Rowan for at least a year and have a G.P.A. of 3.1 or above.

Phi Beta Delta, founded at California State University in 1986 is the first national honor society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievement in international education.

The goals of the Society are: to recognize the scholarly achievement of international students and scholars, U.S. students who have studied abroad, and faculty and staff who are involved in international activities. It serves as a vehicle for the development of academic-based international programming, and provides a campus network for faculty, staff and students involved in international endeavors. This network extends to thousands of members in chapters across the country and throughout the world. Individuals who have demonstrated scholarly achievement in the international area are nominated for membership in Phi Beta Delta through the Chapter Governing Boards at colleges and universities.

There are three categories of membership: international students who have demonstrated high scholastic achievement at their institutions; domestic students who have demonstrated high scholastic achievement in the pursuit of academic studies abroad; and distinguished faculty, staff and visiting scholars involved in international endeavors such as teaching, administering exchange programs, conducting research, or providing services and programs to international students and scholars.

Once an individual is nominated, he or she is invited to the chapter's annual installation meeting and becomes an official member of the society.
