CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Literacy in the sciences and mathematics is increasingly recognized as crucial for both the general public and success in various professions. The purpose of the Math/Science Specialization in Liberal Studies is to provide interested students with an interdisciplinary, yet substantive and programmed, course of study which emphasizes mathematical and scientific methods and knowledge. This degree program will train students for further study in areas where an understanding of science and math is important, such as (but not limited to) science and technology policy, law, information systems, science writing, and science education. Students pursuing such a major might intend to become elementary school teachers, journalists, information specialists, or paralegals in a technical field. This background in science and mathematics will prepare the major to contribute productively in any technical field by developing their understanding of the scientific enterprise, the use of technology, scientific ways of knowing, and a base of knowledge in the sciences and mathematics. It is expected that this course of study will be especially attractive and useful as a coordinate major for Elementary Education majors. For Elementary Education students in particular, the major's emphasis on the command of mathematical and scientific methods, technology, along with a background in the biological sciences, chemistry, mathematics, and physics, is ideal for professional training and preparation. The program will provide an opportunity for students to develop substantial backgrounds in mathematics and the sciences, preparing them to teach an enhanced curriculum. |
