Project BOAST: BOAST Store
Project Director: MaryLouise E. Kerwin, Ph.D., BCBA
Introduction
Employees of BOAST are able to use their discretionary funding to purchase personal, household, and children's items in the BOAST store.
Store Inventory
The BOAST Store inventory consists of tangible products as well as privileges. Tangible commodities are acquired in the following ways:
- The store has a limited number of smaller priced popular items. These items are available for immediate cash and carry.
- Patients may also shop from the BOAST Store Catalog for household items, electronics, sheets and bedding, toys, books, and other more generic items.
- Items not in the catalog or store can be obtained through a Request Form which must be approved by a designated BOAST staff member.
- Finally, for individualized items requiring choice of color, size, and/or style, women can request a 30 minute supervised shopping trip to designated and approved online websites.
The following privileges have been approved as BOAST Store items:
- One time Room Return Pass
- Extra Phone Time
- Movie Pass
Because of the physical limits of the space, no more than 3 patients are allowed in the store at any one time. To make sure that access to the store is equitable, patients are assigned their shopping day (Friday/Saturday) and their shopping time. The store hours are divided into 15 minute intervals and patients are randomly assigned their times. Patients who are on contract SHOULD NOT be scheduled for a shopping trip. If a woman is on contract and scheduled to be discharged prior to coming off contract, she still may not shop in the store.
As each shopper enters the store, she is handed a clipboard with a Purchase Order Form. Regardless of the item(s) purchased, each shopper needs to complete the following information on the Purchase Order Form.
Store Policies
- Patients are not allowed in the store without their weekly reports or checks. This will be verified by a staff member upon arrival.
- Patients are not allowed to go back to their rooms to obtain their weekly reports or checks to gain entrance to the store.
- If a patient arrives more than 5 minutes late for their shopping appointment or misses their appointment, they are not allowed in the store. No exceptions are made.
- The schedule is posted the Thursday before the store opens after 12 noon. If a patient has a previous engagement, they must provide written documentation signed by the MatriArk staff member responsible for the appointment. This documentations must be given to a BOAST staff member no later than 12 noon on Friday. Accommodations are made for patients who submit documentation.
- Patients do not have to shop each week; however, they may not change their shopping time unless they have a reason documented in writing by the MAFC staff.
- Children are allowed in the store. However, patients are responsible for their child’s actions. If a child leaves the store with an item, the patient and child will be asked to leave even if the patient has not completed their order.
- When requesting a catalog item or requesting another item, women are informed that delivery of the item can be expected within 2-4 weeks.
Support for this program was provided in part by a grant from the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through its New Jersey Health Initiatives program.
